If you haven’t heard by now, there is a chemical in plastic that is harmful to our health. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a hormone-mimicking chemical that can potentially cause many health problems for humans. Bottles made with this chemical will leach it into liquids.

So what is a parent to do? Fortunately there are many options available.

Glass Bottles

Since I breastfed our son we didn’t need many bottles, but I did have a few for when I pumped breastmilk and my husband fed him. Our first choice was glass bottles. I found some Evenflo brand bottles at Babies R Us and they worked great. I did buy new solicone nipples for them, though, as I didn’t like the latex ones that came with the bottles.

Just recently I was in a local baby boutique (Peppermint) and saw the Wee Go glass bottles. They are glass bottles with a colorful silicone sleeve to make it easier for baby to grasp it and also help prevent breakage.

Since then I’ve seen several other brands with the similar idea; glass bottles with outer sleeves:

• Silikids Siliskin Bottle
• Coddletime
• Evenflo Cozy
• Momo Baby (glass bottles and thermal huggers)
• NurturePure (glass bottles and separate silicone sleeves)

Of course there are also many more types of glass bottles out there (ones that don’t have a sleeve). Any of those would be great as well. Glass is my number one choice for a baby bottle.

BPA-Free Plastic Bottles

There are also plastic bottles that are BPA free. One brand I like is Born Free, but there are too many to list. For a complete list of BPA free bottles, go to SafeMama.com. Stainless Steel Sippy Cups and Water Bottles

Stainless steel is my second choice, after glass. Here are a few options:

• Thermos Foogo Sippy Cup
• Klean Kanteen Sippy Cup
• BornFree water bottle
  
• Sigg Baby water bottle

Also worth mentioning is that Kleen Kanteen makes stainless steel baby bottles that transition to sippy cups and then to water bottles, all with just a few different tops. Pretty cool!

The Sigg water bottles are made of aluminum with a special inner coating, which is BPA free. They have amazingly cute designs (you can see them from the link above) and even have a bottle grip for babies who aren’t able to hold onto the bottle yet.
